Course Description And Maps

  • Athletes enjoy this course for its beauty and small town atmosphere. Montauk is a quaint fishing and surfing town on the eastern most tip of Long Island. The town is known for its natural beauty and sports enthusiastic visitors.

Montauk is one of the birth places of triathlon. The sport is growing and athletes want to challenge themselves with longer events. There are few metro area triathlons of this distance. In addition to providing a venue for the athletes, this event will showcase Montauk at a time when the weather is still nice but the summer crowds are not as heavy. This is a great family weekend to spend on the east end with the Olympic, Half Iron distance and Sprint Triathlons on Sunday.

  • Swim 1.5K Swim is an out and back in Fort Pond. This is a fresh water swim with temperatures in the mid to upper 60’s. Wetsuits are recommended, but not mandatory.
Bike 40K The bike course is scenic with rolling hills and beautiful ocean and bay views. It has 1100 feet of total elevation gain.
RUN 10K The run course is challenging and hilly with 403 feet of total elevation gain.

The Aqua Bike category is available for the Olympic and Half. Swim and Bike then cross the finish line!

NOTE: The Olympic swim course starts to the left of the swim exit . The two courses are separate and there will be no confusion for the athletes.  The Olympic bike course is exactly the same as one lap of the Half Iron Distance course with the exception of skipping two out and backs on the return of the loop. These will be marked and staffed.

BIKE SUPPORT
PRE-RACE:

All athletes are responsible for their own bike.
No outside support is allowed as per USAT rules.
There will be limited bike service (assistance fixing flats, and make a pump available) in front of the main tent from 5:00 – 6:00 a.m.

DURING BIKE SEGMENT

There will be two vehicles roving the bike course to assist with any bike problems.  Due to the distance of one loop on the bike course being 25 miles, an athlete may have to wait a short or a long time for assistance.  Athletes with on-course bike mechanical problems should attempt to get to the nearest staff person to have them contact support to let them know where they are.  This is known as “neutral” support and is the only support allowed on the course. Please be aware that NO other support vehicles are allowed on the course.  Athletes may NOT provide their own support vehicles (cars, motorcycles, joggers or bikes).  Outside assistance jeopardizes the safety of athletes and is grounds for penalty.  Please help staff keep the event safe by spreading the word to family, friends and spectators that they should stay at the race site for viewing and cheering and if they wish to workout by running or biking, they should run in town, and/or west on Montauk Highway to ensure they do not interfere with the race.  Thank you for your understanding.
Bikes allowed: Road bike, time trial, mountain bike or hybrid.  (Sorry, no tandem or recumbent bikes!)

The Run Segment: The Olympic run course is exactly the same as one lap of the Half Distance course with omitting one small section that will be well marked and staffed during the race making it simple for the athletes to do the correct course.

RUN FUEL STATIONS (water and full service alternating)
There will be a water stop at every 1.5 mile mark. Every other water stop will be full service with water, Ultima Replenisher and Coke.

USA Triathlon has issued a set of rules to maintain consistency and order from race to race across the country. The rules include sections on membership, and rules of conduct for swimming, cycling, running, and transition. Also included are special sections on protests, hearings and appeals, and rules modifications for physically challenged athletes. For full detail on USAT Rules click HERE
